A 1912-P Barber Quarter certified MS 62 by NGC. This coin is a true blazer -- blast-white, flashy and lustrous with outstanding eye appeal. Even though the frost on this one ebbs and flows across Liberty and the fields, it plays off the light almost like a proof coin, with luster practically caked on in swirls through much of the obverse and reverse. It's one of those coins that has the look of a much higher grade in hand, even if a bit of chatter is evident upon close (very close, actually) inspection. Speaking of chatter, there's nothing that jumps out or draws the eye on either side.
Some chafe on Liberty's cheek and a very light run on her neck are visible with a loupe. However, these are all but impossible to see in hand. I think you can just make some of these out in a couple of the photos, but they don't show up well as the luster really dominates the light. Even in shadow, the camera has a hard time picking up on the contact marks -- which in a way is just as well as they would distort the quality of this coin's "in-hand" look. And that is, after all, what counts.
But for the sake of full disclosure and an accurate description, the chatter is there, even if it isn't all that noticeable and doesn't diminish eye appeal in any appreciable way, if at all. As for the grade, I could easily see this one earning a 63 on another day with another grader, though I hesitate to call it an undergrade as I don't think it's all that far off the mark. Overall, a superb specimen from the Barber Quarter series, especially for the grade. As one of those rare coins that accentuates all of its attributes and minimizes nearly every one of its defects in hand, this coin offers amazing eye appeal with the look of a much higher grade.
